Best cargo and utility e-bikes

Long-tail cargo bikes and high-payload alternatives compared on what they can carry, how far, and how safely.

A cargo e-bike can replace a lot of short car trips: the school run, the grocery haul, the hardware store. The key spec is payload, the total weight of rider plus cargo the bike is rated to carry, and with cargo bikes it is common to see a lower rider-only limit too. Respect both numbers.

We track two dedicated long-tail cargo bikes, the Lectric XPedition2 and the Rad Power Bikes RadRunner. We also include several non-cargo bikes that state very high payloads and accept racks, because for many buyers a 400–500 lb payload on a regular frame does the same job.

All figures come from each brand’s official product page, checked Oct 15, 2026. These are spec comparisons, not hands-on tests. Before carrying a child, read each brand’s passenger rules and use the accessories they specify.

How we picked

Payload came first, then the rider-only limit where stated, then battery capacity (cargo eats range), motor power, and certification. We only call a bike a cargo bike if the brand sells it as one; the others are high-payload alternatives.

What to look for in a cargo e-bike

Total payload and rider limit. The Lectric XPedition2 lists 450 lb (330 lb rider); the Rad Power Bikes RadRunner lists 320 lb (275 lb rider). Add up rider, passengers, bags and accessories, then leave a margin.

Rack rating. The rear rack has its own limit. A rack rated for a child seat or passenger pad is what makes a long-tail a family bike.

Motor and gearing. A loaded bike on a hill needs torque. A 750W nominal motor is the sensible minimum for regular heavy loads. Throttle (Class 2) helps when starting from a stop with weight on the back.

Battery and range under load. Claimed ranges assume light loads. Carrying 100 lb of cargo can cut real range by a third or more. A 624Wh battery is fine for errands; for longer loaded trips, consider a second battery if the brand offers one.

Brakes and tires. Heavier loads mean longer stopping distances. Hydraulic disc brakes and wide tires make a real difference.

Carrying kids

Child carrying is where cargo bikes earn their keep, and where care matters most. Use only the seats, footrests, handlebars and wheel guards the manufacturer approves for that model, follow the brand’s minimum and maximum child age and weight rules, put helmets on every passenger, and practice loaded starts and stops in a quiet place first. Check local laws too, since rules on carrying passengers vary.

Safety notes

CPSC warning 26-118 (November 2025) told owners to stop using certain Rad Power Bikes batteries (RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y and HL-RP-S1304) sold with older models, including the RadRunner 1, 2 and Plus. Rad lists Safe Shield batteries on the current RadRunner shown here. If you buy a used RadRunner, check the battery model number against the CPSC notice linked on its card.
