Most e-bikes weigh 60–80 lb, two to three times as much as a regular bike. That weight hardly matters while the motor is running, but it matters a great deal when you carry the bike up stairs, lift it onto a car rack, roll it onto a train, or pedal home with a flat battery.

Lighter e-bikes trade some battery and motor power for that convenience. The question is how much range and power you can give up. For a short, flat commute or casual rides, a lighter bike with a smaller battery is often the better tool. For hills, heavy loads and long distances, you’ll want more.

Brands don’t all measure weight the same way: some include the battery and some don’t. We show each brand’s wording exactly. All figures come from official product pages, checked Oct 15, 2026. These are spec comparisons, not hands-on tests.

How we picked

We ranked by stated weight, using the brand’s wording. Where weight excludes the battery (as with the Lectric XPress2: 55 lb without battery (battery 8 lb)), we added the stated battery weight before comparing. Ties went to the bike with more battery and named certification.

What you give up with a lighter e-bike

Battery size. The Aventon Soltera 2.5 has 345.6Wh, roughly half the battery of many heavier bikes. For a 5–10 mile commute that is plenty; for 30-mile rides it isn’t.

Motor power. Lighter bikes often use 300–350W motors. On a light bike that is enough for moderate hills, but heavier riders on steep climbs will notice.

Tires and comfort. Lighter bikes usually use narrower tires and may skip suspension, so they feel more like a regular bike: quick and efficient on pavement, firmer on rough roads.

What you gain

You get a bike that is easier to carry, easier to lift onto a rack, easier to store, and still rideable without assist if the battery runs out. Many riders also find light e-bikes more fun to ride, since they handle more like a traditional bicycle. If you commute by train for part of the trip, combine light weight with a fold: the Lectric XP Lite 2.0 is the only folder we track under 50 lb.

Tips for carrying an e-bike

Remove the battery first, lift with your legs, and hold the bike by the frame rather than the handlebars. On stairs, roll the bike on its rear wheel with the front lifted. Use a car rack rated for e-bike weights and remove the battery for transport.
