If you will carry your scooter regularly, up apartment stairs, onto a train or into the office, weight is the spec that decides whether you keep using it. A scooter that is great to ride but miserable to carry tends to stay home.

Most commuter scooters weigh 40–60 lb. A handful come in under 35 lb, and those are what this guide is about. Light scooters usually trade away battery size, suspension and tire size, so the trick is finding the one that gives up the least for your route.

All figures come from each brand’s official product page, checked Oct 15, 2026. These are spec comparisons, not hands-on tests.

How we picked

We ranked every scooter by stated weight, then compared battery size, rider limit, IP rating and certification among the lightest. A scooter only made our picks if it names UL 2272 certification.

What light scooters give up

Battery and range. Batteries are heavy. The Hiboy S2R Plus has ≈ 313.2Wh; the much heavier Hiboy MAX Pro has ≈ 720Wh. The NIU KQi Air is the exception, with 451.2Wh at 26.2 lb, which is a big part of why it costs more.

Rider limit. Light frames often carry less. The Hiboy S2R Plus and Apollo Dash list 220 lb. Heavier riders should look at the 265 lb models or our heavy rider guide.

Suspension and tire size. Smaller, lighter scooters tend to have smaller wheels and less suspension. They ride well on smooth pavement but feel every crack on rough streets.

Carrying tips

Check the fold mechanism and carrying point before you buy: a scooter that folds with the stem latching to the rear fender carries as one piece, which is much easier than one that flops. Carry it by the stem near the balance point, keep it close to your body on stairs, and look for a scooter whose folded length fits under a train seat or in your trunk.

Are lightweight scooters good for heavier riders?

Check the rider limit. The lightest models we track list 220–265 lb. If you’re near the limit, choose a scooter with headroom, since hills and range suffer near the maximum.
