How we picked

We included every scooter priced under $600 when we checked, then ranked on price per watt-hour, rider limit, IP rating and named certification. The NIU KQi 200P wins on most of those at once: the biggest battery here, the highest rider limit, and a low sale price.

What to expect from a budget scooter

Range. With 280–480Wh batteries, real-world range is often 10–20 miles depending on rider weight and speed. Fine for a short commute; tight for a long one.

Rider limit. Budget scooters list 220–265 lb. Riders near the limit will see slower hill climbs and shorter range.

Ride comfort. Small wheels and limited suspension are common. Smooth bike lanes are fine; cobblestones and broken pavement are not much fun.

Brakes. Budget scooters often combine an electronic brake with a drum, disc or fender brake. Practice emergency stops before riding in traffic.

When to spend more

If your commute is longer than about 5 miles each way, you weigh more than 220 lb, or your roads are rough, the step up to $700–$900 brings bigger batteries and better suspension. The Hiboy MAX Pro (≈ 720Wh, $729.99) and Apollo Explore 2.0 (648Wh, $749) are the next tier. See our commuter scooter guide.
