Speed changes everything
Kinetic energy rises with the square of speed. At 40 mph a rider and scooter carry four times the energy they do at 20 mph, which means four times the braking work and far worse consequences in a crash. Small wheels make potholes and debris more dangerous at speed. Treat a 30–44 mph scooter like a motorcycle, not a toy.
What fast scooters need
Brakes. Dual disc or hydraulic brakes, ideally with an electronic brake as well. Practice emergency stops at low speed first.
Suspension and tires. Front and rear suspension and large pneumatic tires keep the wheels on the ground over bumps at speed.
Lighting. Bright headlights and brake lights, plus extra lights or reflective gear, because drivers misjudge the speed of small vehicles.
Steering stability. Some performance scooters offer steering dampers to reduce wobble at speed. A wobble at 40 mph is dangerous, so check the stem and fold for play before every ride.
Protective gear. A full-face helmet certified for motorized use, gloves, and abrasion-resistant clothing.
Weight and practicality
The fastest scooters are also the heaviest: 102 lb and 103.6 lb for the two flagships. They don’t fold small or carry easily, so you need ground-floor storage and a secure place to lock them. If you need to carry a scooter, see our lightweight scooter guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest electric scooter you track?
The Apollo Phantom 2.0 (52V), at 44 mph.
Is it legal to ride a 40 mph scooter on the road?
It depends on where you live. Many places cap e-scooter speeds on public roads well below 40 mph or classify faster scooters as mopeds. Check your state and city rules before buying.
Do fast scooters have shorter range?
At high speed, yes. Wind resistance rises steeply with speed, so riding flat out uses much more energy per mile. Range claims are usually measured in the slowest mode.
